“Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee,” the spokeswoman said in a statement. “This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices.”
Samsung plans to start with shutting down Boxee’s Cloud DVR service on July 10 according to Variety:
In a statement posted on its website, Boxee said users of the Cloud DVR service, which was advertised as providing unlimited recordings for $9.99 per month in nine U.S. markets, would lose access to all their recordings after July 10.
“We realize many of you loved the service, and we’re sorry it won’t be available moving forward,” Boxee said.
EDITOR: Well that should make a few customers irate... I am reading a Grab for talent, probably around UI and UX which Samsung has never really done well with. Or perhaps hedging on the STB market.
The rumour that Boxee was on the blocks was covered at TV App Market recently, and the company was hunting for cash for their next round that was just not coming in. Sales of the Boxes were rumoured to be around 70,000 units which probably part of the problem as they just were never able to get mass market traction.
