The app economy is large, active and thriving, with nearly half of the U.S. population using mobile apps. With hundreds of thousands of apps in the hands of consumers, Variety is presenting the First Annual Entertainment App Awards to recognize the best apps in the entertainment industry, selected by industry stakeholders, publishers, academics, tech journalists and more. The Entertainment App Award categories and judging criteria were chosen to reward and recognize innovation and excellence within the entertainment app industry. Winners will receive recognition at the Awards Dinner on November 29.

Categories:

• 1. Best Second Screen TV App: Award recognizing the best second screen app in television. This app helps the audience engage with their favorite programs, sports or special events on TV.
• 2. Best Smart TV App: Award recognizing the best app developed specifically for Smart TV use and enjoyment.
• 3. Mobile Innovation Award for Social TV App: Award recognizing the app of 2012 that has expanded the overall Social TV experience for content owners, consumer and advertisers.
• 4. Best Technology in Social and Interactive TV: Award recognizing best of breed of platform, service and technology providers that power and otherwise enable social and interactive TV experiences.
• 5. Best App Supporting a Film Launch: Award recognizing creativity and innovation as a companion to a film release.
• 6. Best Entertainment IP-based Mobile Game: Award recognizing the overall best mobile game tied to a TV or film franchise.
• 7. Best Social Discovery App: Award recognizing the best app for discovering and sharing TV, film and/or music entertainment.
• 8. Best Music App: Award recognizing the best app for enjoying, discovering and sharing music, music videos and related experiences.
• 9. Best Kids Entertainment App: Award recognizing innovation in delivering entertaining, safe and secure Kids & Family entertainment and learning experiences.
• 10. Entertainment App Developer of the Year 2012: Award recognizing overall excellence in development, including cross-platform delivery, UX, social media, payments and technology.
