Samsung Aims to be Smartest TV in the Connected TV Market
Kim Hyung-eun, writing for the English press in Korea, reports today that Samsung has formerly entered the ‘Smart’ TV race and with Google TV approaching, firm hopes a service of its own can win out. However, Samsung has not completely ruled out a relationship with Google - as we also wrote about earlier in 2010 when rumours in Korea had Samsung making eyes at Google TV came out. It appears they are still leaving all options on the table in terms of Google TV.
The company said it plans to differentiate its Web-based TVs from Google TV by focusing on localization. Samsung’s Internet-connected TVs run on a Linux-based platform, but it is also reviewing the development of devices that operate on Google’s Android platform. Samsung Electronics, the world’s leading Consumer Electronics (CE) maker of flat-screen televisions by volume, has been rolling out Internet-connected displays since 2007, enhancing their capabilities in stages. The latest generation of these TVs allows users to surf the Web, check the weather, get stock market updates, connect with friends, chat and buy products.
At the CES Show in Las Vegas in early 2010, Samsung unveiled their Samsung Apps online store, offering about 120 applications for Internet-connected TVs in some 100 countries by partnering with local content providers. And Samsung has totally changed its approach on Internet@TV. Since May 2010 they moved out from Yahoo Widget SDK.
