Variety is reporting that the UK's YouView, backed by the broadcasters BBC, ITV, Channel 4, ITV, Channel 5, British Telecom, Arqiva and TalkTalk, has apparently held discussions with Hollywood studios about launching online channels on the venture. However, Sky, Virgin Media, IP Vision, Six TV, United For Local Television and the Open Source Consortium are all protesting the platform calling it anti-competitive in the UK so it has faced its critics - however, Ofcom, the regulatory body in the UK has so far given thumbs up for the project.
YouView chairman Kip Meek is prodding the studios, saying that this makes sense for them:
"One of the key components of YouView will be its IP (Internet Protocol) channels … and we want to get many of the big U.S. content owners involved," Meek said at a lunch in London hosted by the Broadcasting Press Guild on Wednesday. If we become successful it will be very important for the studios to participate in YouView, possibly as affiliates. For content creators and owners, IP channels are attractive because they provide much lower entry costs than existing television platforms."
YouView will be available free in the UK via broadband with the purchase of a set-top box.
Meek also noted that YouView is up against Google and Apple in the connected TV market, but failed to mention HbbTV, the standard being used by the rest of Europe and in Korea.
