UK based Green Button Media, today reveals Oggle – the name for their platform’s consumer brand. The Oggle platform is based on HbbTV, the European open standard that is “aimed at harmonising the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment to the end consumer through connected TVs and set-top boxes.”
Green Button Media provides solutions including content aggregation, application development, application management and technologies for the new generation of Connected TVs and is led by entrepreneur Barry Rubery, co-founder of Pace Plc, he revolutionised the digital TV industry when he launched the world’s first MPEG2 digital set top box in 1995.
Adapting to the current state of likely delayed launches, Green Button can be the first in market, aligning to the goal of manufacturers and own-brand retailers that seek to establish themselves firmly at the start and burst of this market later this year.
Barry Rubery comments on the above:
“Choosing the right platform partner has never been so important. Oggle offers what viewers want now, without the risk of uncertainty or delays in getting to market for TV manufacturers and retailers.”
He further elaborates:
“Manufacturers and retailers are clearly recognising our platform as a really viable alternative to content and search engine based competitors and their closed software systems. Now with the announcement of our Oggle branding, savvy consumers who are becoming increasingly aware of what Connected TV can offer will be actively seeking TV sets and STBs that give them the truly enhanced, easy to use and viewer-friendly experience and content they expect.”
Oggle's proposition
Oggle uses the European HbbTV standard, enabling it for TV manufacturers and own-brand retailers to generate revenue from content available on their TVs. They will continue to "own" the viewing space on connected TVs and at the same time create long term potential revenue streams which include e-commerce, app downloads, VOD and the possibility to advertise on Oggle's OPG (Online Programming Guide) homepage.
To speed up the chance of quick adoption and diffusion, Green Button have developed the platform using W3C ‘open standards’ ensuring, App developers and owners can quickly adapt them for use on Oggle enabled TVs.
