Youtube Announces New Partners - Taking on Broadcast TV? Adds 100 YouTube Channels of Original Professional Content
Back in August I attended the first MacTaggart lecture in 35 years at the Edinburgh International Television Festival to be delivered by a technologist, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt - who summed up the three trends to watch most in the future of TV… Mobile, Local and Social. Google chairman Eric Schmidt gave a speech to TV executives in Scotland where he explained how TV was evolving, and tried to convince them that it was futile to fight it.
He also said Google was not trying to compete and denied that Google itself was trying to compete directly with them.
Here's what he said about Google TV:
When it launched, some in the US feared we aimed to compete with broadcasters or content creators. Actually our intent is the opposite. We seek to support the content industry by providing an open platform for the next generation of TV to evolve, the same way Android is an open platform for the next generation of mobile.
And here's what he said about getting into the content business:
Some have suggested Google should invest directly in TV content. To argue that misunderstands a key point: Google is a technology company. We provide platforms for people to engage with content and, through automated software, we show ads next to content that owners have chosen to put up. But we have neither the ambition nor the know-how to actually produce content on a large scale....But of course we are helping to fund content.
So much for that idea.

The new channels will feature content from actress Amy Poehler, actor Ashton Kutcher and basketball star Shaquille O'Neal, as well as news and how-to content. Sounds like a lot more reality TV drivel. The new programming will include channels created by celebrities and producers from the fields of music, television, film, news and sports, said YouTube. The channels will start appearing next month, with more coming over 2012. The project's budget is about $100 million.
“The first of these new original channels will appear on YouTube starting next month and will continue over the next year,” said Robert Kyncl, Global Head of Content Partnerships at Youtube in a blog post. "They’ll be available to you on any internet-connected device, anywhere in the world, with all the interactivity and social features of YouTube built right in."
Will this help drive consumers to the TV App stores on the living room TVs?
At Appmarket.tv we have also reported previously that Google was planning a YouTube movie subscription service in UK, that Google was reaching for brand sponsorship of new 'Youtube Originals' - moving into video production, the wildfire rumour that didn't happen with Google to buy Hulu for $2 Billion?, and even going as far to Negotiate to Stream Live NBA, NHL Games on YouTube. Google acquired New Networks for this very move.
More at the Youtube blog from Kyncl:
Today we’re announcing that even more talented creators and original entertainment will soon join YouTube’s existing channel lineup, including channels created by well-known personalities and content producers from the TV, film, music, news, and sports fields, as well as some of the most innovative up-and-coming media companies in the world and some of YouTube’s own existing partners. These channels will have something for everyone, whether you’re a mom, a comedy fan, a sports nut, a music lover or a pop-culture maven.
Our goal with this channels expansion, along with the grants and educational programs we’ve launched in the past year, is to bring an even broader range of entertainment to YouTube, giving you more reasons to keep coming back again and again. And for advertisers, these channels will represent a new way to engage and reach their global consumers.
Are we seeing the next phase of disruption after Netflix and Lovefilm?
Mashable reports:
The channels will be anchored by a celebrity lineup that includes Madonna (DanceOn), Shaq (The Comedy Shaq Network), Rainn Wilson (SoulPancake), Ashton Kutcher (Katalyst Thrash Lab) and Deepak Chopra (Generate The Chopra Well). YouTube’s partnerships run deeper than celebrities though: WWE, WSJ, The Onion, SB Nation, Demand Media, CafeMom, TED, IGN, Slate, Bleacher Report, InStyle Magazine and Lionsgate are all partners that will seed the content for the new YouTube .
