TV-on-the-Go? Mobile App for On-Demand and Live TV peaking
Distimo releases monthly reports, analysing app stores and giving insights in purchases and downloads in these stores.
Reports cover Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog and Windows Marketplace.
One of the major findings of the July 2010 report is the following:
The most successful free applications that monetized using in-app purchases this month in the Apple App Store for iPhone are MobiTV (MobiTV), ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup (ESPN) and Tap Fish (BayView Labs).
Being the most succesful free application, Distimo elaborates:
The most successful free application that monetized using in-app purchases is MobiTV, which enables users to watch on-demand and live TV.
The application is free and users can upgrade to the subscription version at $9.99 for the first month.
On the MobiTV site, the following is mentioned on the iPhone app:
MobiTV is now available on the iPhone* with LIVE news from ABC News NOW, FOX News and MSNBC plus dozens of on-demand titles from Emmy nominated shows like The Office, Friday Night Lights, 30 Rock & more. Best of all, downloading MobiTV is FREE.
Available channels can be viewed here.
A couple of questions can be asked with regard to this customer behavior.
* Does this mean that people are trying out mobile TV, simply because it's
free?
* Are people considering/watching TV-on-the-go that is suitable for such a
small screen?
* Or do people have the intrinsic need to consume TV content anywhere at
anytime, and the choice of screen is secondary in the decision making process?
I do believe it's a combination of the 2nd and 3rd which is empowered by the available free app.
Consumer behavior alteration or creating new value?
I have tried to watch TV content on my iPhone, but it's not the most suitable screen for me to see movies and sports.
News on the other hand is enjoyable, not having the focus on screen quality and size.
What's your experience with mobile TV?
