The third season of Dutch Public Broadcasting / BNN television series FRESHERS (Dutch: Feuten) has just kicked off in the Netherlands. With a transmedia twist.
Accompanying the series is a transmedia campaign designed by Spektor and Elastique which has, with blazing speed, topped the charts in the Dutch application stores. The main part of the transmedia campaign is a smartphone app that has hit over 20,000 downloads and 15,000 hazed and active members posting more than 50,000 messages which has shocked the both the transmedia team and the producers.
Spektor CEO Tim Murck:
'The success is overwhelming, We see people organising their own events, flirting with each other and being engaged for hours. A team of crowd managers are working around the clock to interact with our active community. We see the future of entertainment happening right under our nose, it's remarkable".
The fictional H.S.C. Mercurius is now the largest fraternity group of the Netherlands. And this fraternity group is uniquely accessible via a smartphone.
The transmedia journey includes a 15 minute hazing process to prove you are worthy to be a H.S.C. Mercurius member. Tests such as popping thirty beers in a minute and answering questions about the fraternity rules lead you through the hard-fisted, hazing committee. After a few hours of waiting in anticipation, new members are finally welcomed into the fraternity group.
After being accepted members can do basically everything they would want to do in any 'real' fraternity such as chat with other members in the virtual society, raise their own chapter with friends, work on their status by accomplishing achievements and even watch extra, exclusive video content.
In the following weeks, the Spektor team is planning a whole new deepening storyline which will evolve for the most active members (Alphas). A 'skull and bones' kind of backstory was developed for this ARG that will take the players to the dark corners of the fraternity group H.S.C. Mercurius.
This project was commissioned by BNN. Funded by the Dutch Cultural Media Fund and Dutch Public Broadcasting. Television show and upcoming movie Freshers (Feuten) are produced by Pupkin Film. The 10 episode series starring Dutch celebrities as Manuel Broekman, Victoria Koblenko, Tim Murck and Robert de Hoog is about the troubles of a fictional fraternity group called H.S.C. Mercurius.
